March 8th 2012, I went to the Emergency Room. Why? I had a planter’s wart on the bottom of my left foot for about 2 years , which then I began taking care of it myself. Needless to say, big mistake! My foot became infected and I had to have my leg amputated (below the knee). I was operated upon at the Worcester Medical Center Worcester MA, which was a success. The incision healed and off to Fairlawn Rehab I went, to learn how to exercise with the help of the Physical Therapists (P.T.)
It was really fun learning to hop on one leg but I did it. It was hard but well worth it. Then, I needed the Occupational Therapy to learn to use the Stove, make a bed, do dishes etc, but I succeeded at them all.
On March 29th, I came home to start home care with Acclaim Home Health Care. We started Physical Therapy right away with exercises. My P.T. made me work to strengthen my stump. My goal was to get out of the wheelchair. So on April 23th 2012, I was fitted with a prosthesis, then I was good to go. First, starting out, I was walking with a walker for about 3 weeks, and then to a cane. I now can go out to cook-outs and shopping etc. I am starting to learn to walk without the cane in my apartment.
I know I have accomplished most of my goals but could not have done it without the help of my P.T.(Meg), my home health aide (Karen) and the friendliest people from Acclaim Home Health Care. They have been there for me. I really appreciated what they have done for me. I will never forget them. (Great People).
My goal to walk normal will be very soon (no cane). So I tell friends and family not to be your own doctor, get medical help when things do not seem right.
So in closing, I just want to say to you all, to have determination and a positive attitude and then you know you can accomplish your goals.
Thank You.
